Joseph H. Pilates History

Joseph Hubertus Pilates. (1883 - 1967)
Born: 9 December 1883; Mönchengladbach, Germany.
Died: 9 October 1967 (aged 83); New York City.

As a child, Joseph suffered asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. Due to his physical ailments Joseph dedicated his life to improving his physical strength. By age 14 he was fit enough to pose for anatomical charts.

Pilates believed that mental and physical health were interrelated and is renowned for developing a system of exercises intended to strengthen the human mind and body.

After World War 1, Joseph emigrated to the United States where he opened a studio in New York City, along with wife Clara. Pilates taught renowned dancers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine. Other dancers also became devotees, and gradually a wider audience got to hear of Pilates’ method. They found Pilates’ method was the best way to recover from and prevent any recurrence of injury.

Pilates continued to advocate for and teach his method well into his old age, even once he was physically incapable of performing the exercises himself.
